Have you ever noticed that air quality is worse near the freeway? Wondered why the LA river was paved? Wanted to increase the numbers of public parks in south LA? Los Angeles suffers from numerous environmental problems that worsen the lives of its residents. Not enough people have access to parks, air quality is poor, and our water supply struggles to keep up. Many of these problems could be improved with simple changes to people's everyday behavior.
Join us for the Innovation Lab’s first hackathon of the semester, in which teams will create media experiences to help solve environmental problems in Los Angeles. Each team will create a short video, which will then connect to other media such as Facebook pages, games, community artwork and mobile apps. This transmedia storytelling is one of the big ideas we’re working on in the Innovation Lab. Get creative on how to engage people in the cause! It doesn't need to be a finished product, but it should show off an innovative (and perhaps humorous) way of addressing this important problem.
At the hackathon you’ll be given a demo of RIDES, a cutting-edge transmedia video platform you can use. We’ll also provide transportation off campus to an amazing and fun location – the new WeWork co-working space in Hollywood, conveniently located just two blocks from the Hollywood/Highland red line Metro stop and in the heart of the LA startup scene. You bring your laptops, smartphones and cameras to work on. Come with a team or by yourself to meet teammates there! You can even invite friends who aren’t currently at USC, as long as your team is at least half USC students.
We’ll meet at noon on Friday, 9/27 in the Innovation Lab and take a bus to WeWork. We’ll start the hackathon with a short brainstorming process and mentors will be around to provide guidance and technical assistance. For the next 24 hours you will work with your team to prototype your transmedia experience and prepare a brief presentation. At 10:30 AM on Saturday you'll present your idea to a panel of industry judges with the winner announced at noon.
The best project – defined by originality, insightfulness, creativity, and strength of team – will win a six-month membership at the WeWork co-working space and three Google Nexus 7 tablets to play with. The winning team will also get priority admission to develop their project in the spring 2013 Digital Design and Innovation course, a 10-week for-credit class at the Innovation Lab where groups can further develop their projects – with a $2500 stipend!
